On the December 22 episode of tvN’s “Trivia 2”, Yoo Hee Yeol discussed if he wanted to make record label Antenna into a big entertainment company like SM, YG or JYP Entertainment.
In the episode Yoo Shi Min, Hwang Gyo Ik, Yoo Hyun Joon, Jang Dong Sun and Yoo Hee Yeol took a trip around the Gangnam area in Seoul. Yoo Hee Yeol first visited K-Star Road with Hwang Gyo Ik who doesn’t live in Seoul. They took a tour around the street, went to see the famous “horse dance” statue of Psy’s “Gangnam Style” and also took a picture with it, imitating the popular pose.
After taking a tour of some of the entertainment agencies in the Chungdam and Nonhyeon area, the cast members sat together to talk about and share their views on K-pop and the Korean entertainment industry in general.
During the conversation, Yoo Hee Yeol shared about his record label Antenna which he founded in 1997. Yoo Shi Min then asked, “Do you want to make Antenna a big entertainment agency like SM, YG, or JYP Entertainment?” To that, Hwang Gyo Ik added, “We visited SM Entertainment earlier and it was amazing. Yoo Hee Yeol seemed to be jealous, too.”
Yoo Hee Yeol modestly replied, “I don’t want to be like SM Entertainment. Once you reach that sort of scale, you begin to lose the essence. It’s not about which is better or worse.” Yoo Hee Yeol stood by his principles and expressed how it was important that his artists focused on the music that the individuals make.
Yoo Hee Yeol (stage name Toy) is the founder of indie record label Antenna, which was founded in 1997 as ‘Toy Music‘, later changed to Antenna in 2007. The artists under Antenna include, Kwon Jin Ah, Sam Kim, Jung Seung Hwan and Lucid Fall.
