MBC‘s Idol Star Athletics Championships in talks of returning for the 2018 Lunar New Year!
On December 27th, multiple industry insiders stated that the 2018 Idol Star Athletics Championships will take place from January 15th to 22nd. On the same day, Goyang Gymnasium confirmed stating, “Our indoor gymnasium has been booked for the filming of MBC’s ‘Idol Star Athletics Championships’ on January 15, 2018.”
However, a member of MBC responded saying that the plans for the show were still uncertain. MBC stated, “While it is true that we are currently in the midst of planning [the event], the exact details have not yet been confirmed. We are still discussing the location and the dates of filming. Nothing has been decided.”
According to sources’ reports, this year the sports that caused most number of injuries amongst its participants will be eliminated to prevent injuries. This includes futsal and basketball, as the two events caused the most injuries in the previous year’s Idol Star Athletics Championships.
However, MBC also plans to introduce bowling as a new sport, along with original categories of track and field events, archery, aerobics (for male competitors), and rhythmic gymnastics (for female competitors).
Idol Star Athletics Championships is a holiday special event broadcast by MBC that features celebrities, mostly notable K-pop idol singers and groups, who compete in multi-sport events. This year Idol Star Athletics Championships took place only once, on January 30th and for the first time in 7 years, the event that was scheduled to broadcast as Chuseok special, was cancelled due to the general strike against MBC.
It is also reported that this year Wanna One will be making their first appearance at the event, with several members in talks to compete in the bowling event.
