BTS most retweeted or liked celebrity in 2017

For the year 2017, BTS has been recognized as the most retweeted or liked celebrity on Twitter, with half a billion retweets or likes worldwide.

Twitter Inc., this month crowned BTS as the world’s most tweeted about celebrity in 2017. “According to a New York based researcher Shareablee Inc., BTS has been retweeted or liked around 502 million times this year,” says Bloomberg News, making the group the highest tweeted about celebrity for the year 2017.

Although BTS has around 11.2 million followers on Twitter so far, in comparison to Justin Bieber who has 104 million followers and U.S. President Donald Trump with 44.9 million followers, the followers are more engaged with BTS as the group exceeded both Justin Bieber and Donald Trump. Justin Bieber being retweeted or liked 22 million times and Donald Trump 213 million times.

The group has also managed to get their name into the famous Guinness Book of World Records 2018 under the category ‘Most Twitter Engagements’, for the most Twitter retweets a male music group has ever had.

Anna-Michelle Lavandier, an analyst at Shareablee stated, “Social media was a big part of why BTS managed to break into the mainstream U.S. market. Getting a high number of likes and retweets- also known as “actions”, is a key measure of how fast one’s influence is spreading.

Mentioning BTS’s social media popularity in their home country Korea as well, Bloomberg News states that its not just Twitter, “BTS is ubiquitous on social media in its home market of Korea, where it has the highest following on Naver Corp.’s live broadcasting app V LIVE and has a messaging-sticker business with Line Corp.” Currently BTS remains the most followed channel on Naver Corp‘s V LIVE with more than 7 million followers and the group has about 1.4 million followers on Tencent Holdings Ltd.’s QQ Music service.

With the incredible success of the seven member group in 2017, the bar of expectation has been raised and all eyes are in anticipation of the group’s and their management company’s next move. For the next year, BTS’s management company, Big Hit Entertainment is also planning major overseas concert tours. In a recent interview with Bloomberg News, Big Hit Entertainment’s CEO, Bang Si-hyuk mentioned his plans for preparing to debut a new boy group “using a ‘success formula’ that could be replicated with other K-pop bands seeking to break into the U.S. charts.

Big Hit is also considering an initial public offering or IPO, in the near future, however no specific timelines or other details have been announced. With BTS’s rapid growth and recognition, it seems that Big Hit Entertainment has bigger plans for the group and the company in 2018.

Congratulations to BTS for another new title to sum up the year 2017!
