K-Pop is all the rage right now, riding out the Hallyu wave but if you’re interested in mixing things up, consider these five indie artists based in Korea!

The Black Skirts (검정치마)

Officially formed in 2014, this band consists of Oh Hyuk, Im Dong-gun, Lim Hyun-jae, and Lee In-woo. Hyukoh is known to have diverse influences in their music from other cultures, labeling themselves as indie pop and indie rock. Currently, they are signed with HIGHGRND and DRDRamc.

Kiha & The Faces (장기하와 얼굴들)

Known for indie rock and folk rock, this band consists of Chang Kiha, Yohei Hasegawa, Lee Min-ki, Jeong Jung-yeop, Lee Jong-min, and Jeon Il-jun. Currently, with DRDRamc, they’ve been around since their first single release in 2008.

Yozoh (요조)

Known as the “singing goddess of Hongdae” for bringing many of the indie music community into the mainstream media, she first released her official album in 2007.

Urban Zakapa (어반자카파)

Urban Zakapa combines urban + zappy + kaleidoscopic + passionate, a unique abbreviation of the four. Formed in 2009, they were once signed with Fluxus Music but they are now with MakeUs Entertainment.
