On January 7th, South Korean officials stated that the 2018 PyeongChange Winter Olympics will only accept VISA credit cards for purchases of tickets, souvenirs and other goodies at the games venue, which could caused inconvenience for people who use other cards.
VISA being the official global sponsors of the International Olympic Committee, it enjoys the exclusive right to be the only credit card that can be used for payments at the Winter Games.
The VISA-only policy is likely to cause public inconvenience for visitors, especially visitors from China who mostly use China’s UnionPay credit cards. Officials, said that they expect many Chinese visitors at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, as Beijing will be the host for 2022 Winter Olympic Games. So, for those who do not have VISA credit cards, they can purchase VISA prepaid cards with other credit for transactions at Olympic venues.
The vending machines, to buy VISA prepaid cards are said to be installed at the Olympic venues, for the convenience of the visitors. A VISA card official also stated, “We are working to ensure that non-VISA card holders do not suffer inconvenience.”
